Hi there!
Thank you for your interest in supporting the Huni Kuin!

We're glad you feel connected to the protection of the Amazon, and its unique ecosystems: A synergy of lives and cultures of peoples, animals, plants, and the elements.

Since 2013, our Berlin-based NGO Living Gaia e.V. is supporting the Indigenous Huni Kuin in the Brazilian Amazon. Together with friends and allies all over Europe, we are organizing a fundraising tour. Our aim is to raise funds for the Huni Kuin Land Purchase Project in the state of Acre (see description below).

We’re proud to announce the visit of three Huni Kuin wisdom keepers, Batani, Rita, Nixiani and Bunke Huni Kuin to 2022 Europe tour! We welcome you to an immersion into Huni Kuin knowledge, songs, and customs. Learn about the struggles Indigenous Amazonians are facing and ways to support them.

The project

We believe that transformation towards a society which is in service of our planet needs the exchange between Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures.

The life and cosmology of Indigenous Amazonians are intrinsically related to the forest. Unfortunately, The Amazon is getting destroyed faster than ever before, with significant consequences for the natural systems. Satellite pictures show that since the election of Bolsonaro in 2018, the situation has become even more catastrophic.

The Indigenous Peoples, who are at the front line of destruction, are not only facing the eradication of their ancestral lands and livelihoods, but also of their cultures.

The Huni Kuin land purchase project supports Indigenous Amazonian peoples to create a network of reserves managed by themselves to save the forest from destruction. The first step is to purchase a 17.000 ha piece of rainforest in Acre. The area will serve as a model for Indigenous-led protection of biodiversity and Indigenous cultures.

The Huni Kuin leaders

BATANI HUNI KUIN

My name is Batani, guardian of female knowledge, mother of 6 children and master of the arts of the Huni Kuin. I was born and raised in the village, in communion with nature and its spirit. My path led me to the city of Jordão, where I practice the healing art as a shaman. As the female leader of the tribe, it is also part of my duties to travel outside the forest to educate people about the life of the Huni Kuin and the dangers we face due to land grabbing and displacement as well as climate change.

BUNKE HUNI KUIN

I am Bunke Inani Huni Kuin. I live in the village of Boa Vista on the Rio Jordao, in Acre, Brazil. I have 5 children and I am the cultural leader of the women in my village. I have travelled a lot in Brasil, Latin America and Europe passing on our culture and traditions and calling for more indigenous wisdom in the world. I work especially with women and give retreats and workshops about the Huni Kuin arts.

RITA HUNI KUIN

My name is Rita Huni Kuin and I am from the indigenous land of the Kaxinawa, at the river Jordao from the village Chico Curumim. I am one of the female representatives, communicator, artisan artist and mother of one little Huni Kuin girl. Furthermore I am one of the founders of the Huni Kuin youth group Kayatibu, with whom I've realized my first projects in Acre. Since only recently I have become one of the founders of the women association Ainbu Dayá.

NIXIANI INANI HUNI KUIN

I am Nixiani Inani Huni Kuin the second daughter of Bunke. I am 14 years old and I life in the village Boa Vista at the River of Jordao. In my community we younger generations study the traditions and culture that has been past on for many years. In the same time we integrate the knowledge and ways that we see in the world for example with new instruments, that haven't been in our culture before. In the ceremonies in my village me and my sister, my brother, my mother and father often play guitarre and sing together, after the older ones have finished the traditional part.

The Huni Kuin

Huni Kuin means "the real people" - a name that appropriately describes them, because their entire culture is connected to the rainforest. They have ancient knowledge about the healing power of plants and social cohesion; they live in harmony with nature and as inhabitants of the forest, they protect it most sustainably.

The people behind

Alexandra Schwarz-Schilling

I am Alexandra Schwarz-Schilling, born in 1964, author, economist, psychologist, senior and teaching coach as well as founder and managing director of Coaching Spirale GmbH in Berlin and the Holistic Healing Biotope Living Gaia in the Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goias, Brazil. I am a mother of three and a grandmother. The earth is very important to me. I would like a culture that is more humane and more friendly to life in many areas. I wish for more balance between male and female principles in every person as well as in the economic and social structures around the world. For me, both concerns belong together. In June 2013 I traveled to Huni Kuin villages in Acre for the first time and quickly built friendships. A collaboration developed and so at the end of 2013 I founded the Living Gaia e.V. association to support the Huni Kuin and the preservation of the forest.

I was born in 1990. My background is from conservation research (primatology). Since 2016 I have lived with Indigenous Peoples in Brazil, working as a researcher and film maker. From these experiences, I am convinced that in the cooperation of Indigenous and non-Indigenous societies lies a key for the healing of the planet. As the manager of the Huni Kuin project, I am co-creating a network of protected areas in the Amazon under indigenous leadership. Preserving culture, livelihoods, and biodiversity.

Jaci Meinhold

I work as a psychologist, naturopath and coach. For the past 8-9 years, I’ve been working, studying and periodically living in the forest with the Huni Kuin people.

With the Huni Kuin, I’ve observed certain ways in which the outside world has influenced their culture, particularly regarding gender equality. This, despite the fact that a great portion of the spiritual work, traditions and knowledge are traditionally practiced by women. It has reinforced my belief in the importance of supporting and working with women.

Being familiar with the Huni Kuin and rooted in Brazil and Europe, I consider it my task to help create a bridge between the women of these different societies, especially through ceremonial work, organizing, and communication. Just as the Huni Kuin accompany me in the Amazon, I will accompany them on this fundraising tour. In cooperation with Bunke and Batani, we have already seen various projects in the rainforest to fruition, in Brazil as well as Europe. In the process, we have forged connections and deep friendships that cross cultural and national borders.

For 15 years, I’ve been acting as an agent on behalf of organizations weaving complex multi-stakeholder coalitions together for big causes.
I support the Huni Kuin because I’ve been deeply healed and nourished through my work with plant medicine over the last decade.
What we need now is to build experiments that make an imprint to bullet-proof templates that scale n-dimensionally for the many challenges we face collectively.
My North Star is catalyzing radical systemic change towards the necessary planetary civilization ahead.
